Cost guide
Root canal treatment cost in Chennai
The cost of a root canal depends on the tooth, the number of canals, the number of visits, and whether a crown is included. Many quotes leave the crown out, so the final total can be noticeably higher than the first number you hear.

What changes the price
- Front tooth vs premolar vs molar: back teeth have more canals and take longer
- Re-treatment of a previous root canal, which is usually more complex
- Single-visit or multiple-visit approach
- Use of a specialist (endodontist) for difficult cases
- Post and core build-up when a lot of tooth is missing
- Crown (cap) type: metal-ceramic, zirconia and others
The crown is often a separate cost
After a root canal, back teeth are more likely to crack, so a crown is usually recommended. Ask whether the crown is included, which material is planned, and whether a temporary crown is provided in between. A tooth left without its final restoration for too long can break or become re-infected.
Questions to ask
- Does the quote include X-rays, the crown and follow-up visits?
- How many visits should I expect?
- What is the plan if the tooth turns out not to be restorable?
- If this is a re-treatment, what is the likely outcome?
Signs the tooth is being looked after well
- An X-ray is taken before, and usually after, the root canal
- You are told how many canals the tooth has and whether any are difficult
- A temporary filling protects the tooth between visits
- A clear plan for the crown is made before treatment ends
When to get a second opinion
If you have been told a root canal is needed but you have no pain, if the quote is much higher than you expected, or if you are being advised to extract a tooth you would like to keep, an independent review of your X-ray can help you decide with confidence.
Comparing with extraction
Extraction is usually cheaper on the day, but replacing the tooth later with a bridge or implant can cost more over time. Leaving a gap can let neighbouring teeth tilt and affect your bite. The right choice depends on how restorable the tooth is.
Frequently asked questions
Do I always need a crown after a root canal?
Back teeth usually need a crown to protect them after a root canal. Front teeth sometimes do not. Your dentist will advise based on how much of the tooth remains.
Why is re-treatment more expensive?
Old filling material has to be removed and canals found and cleaned again, which takes longer and is technically harder.
Can you tell me if my root canal is really needed?
Share your X-ray and the plan for a second opinion. Some cases can only be confirmed in person, and the opinion will say so.
