Cost guide
Dental crown (cap) cost in Chennai
A crown, often called a cap, covers a weak or damaged tooth. Prices vary widely because of the material, the lab that makes it, and what else is included in the quote. Knowing what drives the cost helps you compare quotes fairly and choose what suits your tooth.

Why you may need a crown
- After a root canal, especially on back teeth
- A tooth with a very large filling or a crack
- A broken or badly worn tooth
- On top of a dental implant, or as part of a bridge
- To improve the look of a discoloured or misshapen tooth
Crown materials
The best material depends on where the tooth is, how hard you bite, whether you grind your teeth and how much the look matters to you.
- Metal: very strong and needs less tooth removed, but not tooth-coloured
- Metal-ceramic (PFM): tooth-coloured surface over metal; a grey line can show at the gum over time
- Zirconia: strong and tooth-coloured, commonly used for back teeth
- All-ceramic (for example lithium disilicate): the most natural look, often chosen for front teeth
What changes the price
- The material and the brand or lab used
- Whether a digital scan or traditional impression is used
- Build-up of the tooth (core or post) before the crown
- A temporary crown while the final one is made
- Number of visits and any adjustments
Questions to ask before you agree
- Which material is planned, and why for this tooth?
- Does the quote include the core build-up, temporary crown and X-rays?
- Is there a warranty from the lab, and what does it cover?
- If this follows a root canal, is the crown priced separately?
- How much tooth will be trimmed?
When to get a second opinion
If you have been told you need several crowns at once, if a healthy-looking tooth is being crowned for appearance, or if the quote is much higher than you expected, an independent review of your X-rays and plan can help you decide.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a dental crown last?
With good brushing, flossing and regular check-ups, many crowns last 10 years or more. Grinding, hard foods and gum disease shorten their life.
Is zirconia better than metal-ceramic?
Zirconia avoids the metal line at the gum and is very strong, but the right choice depends on the tooth and your bite. Ask your dentist why they suggest a material.
Do I always need a crown after a root canal?
Back teeth usually do, because they are more likely to crack. Front teeth sometimes need only a filling. Your dentist will advise based on how much tooth remains.
