Teeth cleaning and scaling in Chennai
A professional cleaning removes hardened tartar that brushing cannot. It is one of the simplest ways to keep gums healthy. Prices vary with how much build-up there is, whether deeper gum cleaning is needed, and whether polishing or stain removal is included.

Types of cleaning
- Routine scaling and polishing for healthy or mildly inflamed gums
- Deep cleaning (root planing) below the gum line for gum disease, often done in sections over more than one visit
- Stain removal for tea, coffee or tobacco stains
What affects the price
- Amount of tartar and staining
- Whether gum pockets need deep cleaning, and how many areas
- Whether an examination and X-rays are included
- Number of visits
Is scaling bad for teeth?
Scaling done properly does not damage enamel. Teeth may feel sensitive for a few days, or gaps may seem larger, because tartar that was filling those spaces has been removed. Gums usually look and feel healthier within a couple of weeks if cleaning continues at home.
Keeping teeth clean between visits
- Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and a soft brush
- Clean between teeth every day
- Avoid tobacco, which stains teeth and worsens gum disease
- Return for cleaning at the interval your dentist suggests
When cleaning is not enough
If gums keep bleeding after cleaning, teeth feel loose, or gums are pulling away from teeth, you may have gum disease that needs a fuller assessment. A dentist will measure gum pockets and may suggest X-rays.
Cleaning for special situations
Tell the dentist about any medical conditions and medicines before cleaning, especially blood thinners.
- During pregnancy, a cleaning is safe and helpful because gums are more prone to bleeding
- People with diabetes often benefit from more frequent cleaning
- Those with braces, implants or bridges may need extra cleaning around them
Signs you are due for a cleaning
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- Yellow or brown hard deposits along the gum line, especially behind the lower front teeth
- Bad breath that does not improve with brushing
- It has been more than a year since your last cleaning
Frequently asked questions
How often should I get my teeth cleaned?
Many people benefit from a cleaning every six to twelve months. People with gum disease may need it more often. Your dentist will suggest an interval for you.
Does scaling hurt?
Most people feel only vibration and pressure. Sensitive areas can be numbed if needed.
Will cleaning whiten my teeth?
It removes surface stains and tartar, which can make teeth look brighter, but it does not change the natural colour of teeth. That needs whitening.
