Second opinion

A second opinion on braces or aligners

Orthodontic plans run for months or years and are hard to undo midway. A second look before you start can help you understand whether the proposed option suits the kind of correction you need, and whether the quote covers what it should.

Dental models with and without braces

What we look at

  • Whether aligners or braces suit the kind of correction planned
  • Whether gum health and existing dental work have been considered
  • Expected duration and review schedule
  • Retainers and refinements in the quote
  • Whether extractions or other procedures are part of the plan, and why

Red flags worth asking about

  • No X-rays or bite assessment before treatment starts
  • Very short treatment times promised for complex crowding or bite problems
  • No clear plan for in-person check-ups
  • Retainers not mentioned at all

Send us

  • Smile photos (front and both sides, teeth together)
  • Any scans, simulations or X-rays
  • The written plan and quote

For parents

If your child has been advised early (interceptive) treatment, a second opinion can help you understand whether treating now or waiting makes more sense. Share their age, photos and any X-rays.

Questions worth asking any provider

  • What exactly will move, and why is this the right option for my bite?
  • How will progress be checked, and by whom?
  • What happens if I lose an aligner or a bracket breaks?
  • How long must I wear retainers, and are replacements included?
  • What is the total cost, including everything after treatment ends?

Taking good smile photos

  • Use daylight from a window, not a flash
  • Take a front photo with teeth together and lips pulled back, then both sides
  • Add photos of the upper and lower teeth from above and below if you can, using a mirror
  • Keep the phone steady and make sure the teeth are in focus before you upload

What you receive

A written opinion from our consulting dentist explaining whether the plan looks suitable from the records shared, what is unclear, and the questions to take back to your provider. Where a judgement needs an in-person examination, we say so plainly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an opinion on an at-home aligner offer?

Yes. Share what you were given and we will explain what to clarify before you commit.

Do you need X-rays?

They help, especially for bite and root position. If you do not have them, the opinion will say what can and cannot be judged from photos.

Will you tell me which brand to choose?

We focus on whether the type of treatment and plan suit your case, not on promoting a brand.
